Sympathy and Condolence Messages

There are no perfect words after a loss, and people rarely remember the phrasing. They remember that you wrote. Keep it simple, say you care, and offer something real. Here are messages to start from.

General condolences

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm thinking of you and your family.
  • There are no words that make this easier, but I want you to know I'm here.
  • I was heartbroken to hear the news. You're in my thoughts every day.
  • Please accept my deepest sympathy. I'm holding you close.
  • I'm so sorry. Take all the time you need. I'm here whenever you are.
  • Sending you love and strength as you grieve.
  • My heart goes out to you and everyone who loved them.
  • I wish I could take some of this pain from you. In the meantime, I'm here to sit with you in it.

For the loss of a parent

  • I'm so sorry about your mom. She was clearly so loved, and you were clearly so loved by her.
  • Your dad's kindness showed in how he raised you. I'm so sorry for your loss.
  • Losing a parent changes everything. I'm here for the hard days ahead.
  • I'm grateful for everything your mother gave to you and to everyone around her.
  • Thinking of you as you say goodbye to your dad. I wish I could do more.
  • Our parents leave a piece of themselves in us. Yours left something lovely.

For the loss of a spouse or partner

  • I can't imagine how hard this is. Please lean on me. I'd like to help however I can.
  • They were lucky to have you, and you were lucky to have them. I'm so sorry.
  • Your love for them was clear to everyone who saw you together. I'm holding you in my heart.
  • I'm so sorry for your loss. I'll be here for the long haul, not just the first few weeks.

For the loss of a pet

  • I'm so sorry about your dog. They were so lucky to have you.
  • Pets leave pawprints on our hearts. I'm thinking of you.
  • Losing a pet is losing a family member. I'm so sorry.
  • I know how much they meant to you. Sending love.

For a coworker or acquaintance

  • I was so sorry to hear about your loss. Please take whatever time you need.
  • Our thoughts are with you and your family. Please don't worry about work.
  • Please accept my condolences. I'm here if I can help.
  • Thinking of you during this difficult time.
  • With sympathy from all of us.

If faith is part of their life

  • You and your family are in my prayers.
  • May you find peace and comfort in the days ahead.
  • May their memory be a blessing.
  • Praying for strength and comfort for you.

Short and comforting

  • With deepest sympathy.
  • Thinking of you and your family.
  • With love in this difficult time.
  • My heart is with you.
  • So sorry for your loss.
  • Holding you in my thoughts.

Tips for personalizing your message

  • Keep it short. A few sincere lines beat a long, polished letter.
  • If you knew the person, share one real memory ('I'll always remember her laugh'). It tells the family their loved one mattered to others.
  • Avoid 'they're in a better place,' 'everything happens for a reason,' and 'at least…'. Presence beats explanation.
  • Offer something specific ('I'll call Sunday,' 'I'm bringing dinner') and then do it. Check in again weeks later, when the attention fades.
  • Only mention prayers or faith if you know it fits for them.
