Mother's Day Wishes and Messages

Most moms keep the cards, which is reason enough to write something you mean. Here are messages for a mom, a grandmother, a stepmom, and the other women who've mothered you.

For Mom

  • I'm still learning things from you, usually when I catch myself saying something you used to say. Happy Mother's Day.
  • Thank you for being the first person I call, whether the news is good or terrible.
  • You made our home feel safe, and I carry that everywhere.
  • Looking back, I see how much you gave up without making a fuss. I noticed. Thank you.
  • Happy Mother's Day to the one who still knows something's wrong before I say a word.
  • I hope you know the best parts of me are borrowed from you.
  • Thank you for the pep talks, the packed lunches, and the patience.
  • You taught me to be kind and to stand up for myself. Both turned out to be useful.

For a grandmother

  • Grandma, your kitchen is still the best place on earth.
  • Thank you for the stories, the hugs, and the cookies you swore weren't for us.
  • You've held this family together without ever making a speech about it.
  • Our family is bigger and warmer because of you.
  • Every time I visit, I leave happier than I arrived. That's your gift.
  • Thank you for always having time.

For a stepmom or mother figure

  • You didn't have to love me like your own, and you did anyway. Thank you.
  • You've been there on the days that mattered and plenty that didn't.
  • Thank you for stepping in with patience and care. You're a mother to me in every way that counts.
  • Mothering isn't about biology, and you've proved it.
  • Thank you for believing in me when I didn't believe in myself.
  • You're the person I think of when I think of someone who truly cares.
  • To my aunt, my mentor, my friend: thank you for mothering me.

For a new mom or a friend who is one

  • Happy first Mother's Day. You're doing better than you think, and your baby is lucky to have you.
  • You've gone from tired to more tired and you're still smiling. That's remarkable.
  • Watching you be a mom has been one of the joys of this year.
  • Happy Mother's Day to a friend who makes it look easy, and who I know isn't.
  • You're a wonderful mom. The kids are lucky, and so am I to know you.
  • I hope someone else makes the coffee today.

Funny Mother's Day messages

  • Thank you for not selling me when I was a teenager. I was a lot.
  • Sorry about the gray hairs. (Mostly.)
  • You're the reason I know how to cook, apologize, and pick up the phone.
  • I know I'm your favorite child. Happy Mother's Day.
  • Thank you for answering 'where's my…' for the last thirty years.

Short and sweet

  • Happy Mother's Day. I love you.
  • Thank you for everything, Mom.
  • You're the best.
  • Wishing you a day of rest and flowers.
  • Love you more than I can say.
  • To the one who started it all.
  • Thanks for being my mom.
  • Mom, you're the best.

Tips for personalizing your message

  • One specific memory (the thing she said, the meal she makes, the rides she drove) is worth more than a poem.
  • Thank her for something small. People remember small, specific kindnesses.
  • If your relationship is complicated, honest and short beats flowery. 'Thinking of you today' is a perfectly good card.
  • Stepmoms and mother figures often don't expect a card, so naming what they actually did means even more.
